Eligibility criteria for Electrical Engineer

The eligibility criteria for Electrical Engineers in Canada are given below:

• An undergraduate degree in electronics or electrical engineering. The candidates are also eligible if they have graduated from a related engineering field.
• A post-graduate degree or doctorate in a related engineering field may also be required.
• License by a territory or province body to certify them as professional engineers. It would facilitate approval of engineering reports and drawings and certify them as a P.Eng. or Professional Engineer.
• Engineers are required to register after graduation from a recognized study program.
• They are required to have 3 to 4 years of work experience under supervision in engineering and qualify for a professional practice examination.
• A certification by LEED or Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design authorized by the Canada Green Building Council may be asked for by a few employers.

How can an Electrical Engineer migrate to Canada?

There are multiple immigration pathways for Electrical Engineers who wish to migrate to Canada. The two most popular pathways are:

1. Express Entry System

The Express Entry program is the most popular pathway. For this program, the candidate is required to register their profile online by giving the correct details about themselves.  The candidate need not have a job offer to apply and be selected. Although, having a job offer increases their chances of being chosen. The program is easy and quick. It implies that as an Electrical Engineer, it is an efficient way to migrate to Canada. By registering the profile in the Express Entry system, the candidate needs to meet the following eligibility criteria:

• Proof of adequate funds
• Language proficiency in either English or French
• Ability to adapt to Canada

The profile needs to be duly filled in under 60 days. Consequently, the profile is registered in the pool for the draw. The candidate is ranked against other applicants under the CRS or Comprehensive Ranking System. The points are awarded on the basis of fulfilling some requirements. If the candidate meets or exceeds the cut-off score, they receive an ITA or invitation to apply for Canada PR or permanent residency. The Express Entry is further divided into 3 immigration streams. They are:

• CEC or Canadian Express Class
• FSTP or Federal Skilled Trades Program
• FSWP or Federal Skilled Worker Program

Electrical Engineers are classified under the FSWP, through the Skill type A and a TEER code of 21310.

2. Provincial Nomination Program

The Government of Canada formulated this program to help the provinces of Canada to address the labor shortages and economic requirements in the province. The governments of provinces and territories work with IRCC or Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada to nominate international immigrants for work and settle in a specific province of Canada. The provinces nominate only through the system of Express Entry because the profile needs to be authorized by the Canadian government. The candidate should meet the specific requirements of the province/s they have applied for to be eligible for this program. PNP awards 600 points in the candidate's CRS score. The additional points increase the chances of obtaining a Canada PR. Electrical engineers can apply for the following provinces:
