The National Statistics Institute (INE) in Portugal has reported that more than 1.8 million tourists visited Portugal in July 2022. This number stays a little above the number of visitors in the pre-COVID period. This indicates a welcome growth in the tourism sector of Portugal.

The number of tourists who came on a Portugal visit visa in July 2022 (1.8 million) was a little above the number of visitors in Portugal in July 2019. There were 1.78 million visitors in July 2019, that created a record year for Portuguese tourism. So, July 2022 set a new record in the number of visitors in Portugal.

The INE also revealed that in July 2022, 600,000 more visitors arrived in Portugal when compared to July 2021. In July 2021, there were travel restrictions owing to the COVID-19 pandemic. Those restriction affected tourist arrivals in Portugal.

It’s important to note that before the pandemic started, in 2020, Portugal’s tourism sector contributed over 15% to the GDP of this country. Even with the challenges of the pandemic, the country could get 8.1 million visitors in the first 7 months of 2020. This was just 1 million short of the number of visitors who arrived in Portugal before the COVID-19 pandemic.

The largest share of total tourist arrivals in Portugal went to Spain. In July 2022, there were 285,900 tourists from Spain who traveled to Portugal. The UK and the USA came next in line. The number of visitors from these countries has increased recently making them the main source of tourism in Portugal.

Previous data from the INE revealed that there were 183,215 tourists from the United States who had arrived in Portugal. This was a new record of tourist arrivals in Portugal from the USA.

In June 2022, 181,869 Americans visited Portugal. The number increased to 183,215 in July 2022.
