OET is designed for nurses, doctors, and allied healthcare professionals, focusing on real clinical situations such as patient consultations, referral letters, and healthcare handovers. Unlike general English tests, it assesses the communication skills required in healthcare settings.
OET score requirements vary by healthcare regulator and profession. Many authorities require Grades B or C across the four sub-tests. Y-Axis OET coaching provides structured lessons, expert guidance, and targeted practice to help you achieve the grade required for healthcare licensing in the UAE or registration abroad.
*Want to prepare for the OET exam? Book your free OET demo class with Y-Axis today.
The UAE has four main healthcare licensing authorities: DHA for Dubai, DOH for Abu Dhabi, MOHAP as the federal health authority, and SHA for Sharjah. Nurses, doctors, and allied healthcare professionals planning to practise in the UAE must meet the requirements of the relevant licensing authority. OET grade requirements vary by profession and authority, making the right target score essential for your licensing application.
Y-Axis OET coaching helps you prepare for your required OET grade through structured lessons, expert trainer guidance, and targeted practice across all four sub-tests. Strengthen your exam performance and prepare to meet the English language requirements for your UAE healthcare license.
*Want to work in the UAE? Let Y-Axis help you through application process.
OET is accepted by healthcare regulators in countries such as the UK, Australia, New Zealand, Ireland, and Canada to assess English language proficiency for healthcare registration. OET takes approximately 3 hours, including a short break, and is available in three formats: paper-based, computer-based at a test centre, and OET@Home, depending on availability and eligibility. The test includes four sub-tests: Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking. Listening and Reading are common across professions, while Writing and Speaking are tailored to your healthcare role.
Y-Axis OET coaching provides structured preparation, expert guidance, and targeted practice to help you master each sub-test and achieve the grade required for healthcare registration.
| Sub-test | Duration | What to Expect |
|---|---|---|

| Reading | 60 minutes | Healthcare texts, quick-reference tasks, and detailed passages |
| Writing | 45 minutes | A profession-specific clinical letter, such as a referral, transfer, or discharge letter |

The OET Score Calculator converts Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking scores into A–E grades on the 0–500 scoring scale. Each sub-test is assessed separately, with no overall average score. Required grades vary by profession and registration authority, with many regulators requiring Grade B or C+ in specific sub-tests. Y-Axis OET coaching provides expert guidance and targeted practice to help improve performance and prepare for healthcare registration abroad.
| OET Score | Grade | Language Proficiency |
|---|---|---|
| 450–500 | A | Communicates fluently and effectively with patients and health professionals |
| 350–440 | B | Communicates effectively, with only occasional inaccuracies, the most commonly required minimum |
| 300–340 | C+ | Adequate proficiency, sometimes accepted for specific sub-tests |
| 200–290 | C | Moderate proficiency, generally not sufficient for professional registration |
| 100–190 | D | Limited proficiency |
| 0–90 | E | Very limited proficiency |
*Want to understand your target grade? Speak to a Y-Axis expert to see where you stand.
OET results are generally valid for two years from the test date. However, healthcare regulators may require results issued within a specific period for professional registration. Candidates can retake the full test or eligible sub-tests by paying the applicable fee for each attempt.
The standard fee for all four sub-tests is AUD 587. Computer-based results are usually available within six calendar days, while paper-based results may take longer depending on the test location. Y-Axis OET coaching offers expert guidance and targeted practice to help you achieve your required grade and reduce the need for a retake.
*Planning a retake? Speak to a Y-Axis expert to build a focused improvement plan.
OET is available at multiple authorised test centres across the UAE, including Dubai, Abu Dhabi, and Sharjah, so you don't need to travel abroad to take the test. The University of Wollongong in Dubai (UOWD) is one of the confirmed authorised venues, with a new test centre also recently opened in Sharjah. Y-Axis OET coaching helps you prepare for your test, wherever in the UAE you choose to sit it, with structured lessons and expert guidance tailored to your healthcare profession.
