Highlights of Henley Passport Index (HPI)

  • The Henley Passport Index (HPI) places the Canadian passport at 8th position in its global ranking.
  • The HPI is a global ranking of countries with respect to the power of their passports to allow freedom of travel in other countries.
  • HPI ranking indicates the standing of a country in the world reflected by the acceptance of their passports across countries.

It’s time to be impressed by Canada and you just need the Hentley Passport Index (HPI) to get to that point. This global ranking of world nations by their passports has given Canada a high ranking in its 2022 index. Let’s learn more about it.

What is HPI?

You must be aware that the passport of a country tells a lot about the country’s influence among world countries. The passport of a country could provide visa-free access or visa-on-entry facility to its citizens in other countries.

The HPI is a global ranking of countries with respect to their passports. It awards a score to each country based on how many countries a passport grants access to without a visa. The HPI is thus a measure of global mobility.

It’s a highly reliable and used scale of passport power. Countries that rank high on this index are considered very powerful and influential ones.

The HPI is updated quarterly every year. It has collaboration with IATA (International Air Transport Authority). The IATA provides the data needed for HPI to create the index of 199 passports for 227 destinations in the world.

What does HPI say about the Canadian passport?

In 2022, the HPI places Canada among the top 10 most powerful passports in the world. With a score of 185, Canada is ranked eighth on the HPI ranking of 2022. The score 185 means that the Canadian passport can get you visa-free access to 185 countries of the world.

Canada shares its ranking with countries namely Australia, Greece, Czech Republic, and Malta. All these passports too have the score of 185.

How can you wield the power of the Canadian passport?

To own a Canadian passport as someone who has not taken birth in Canada, you have to start planning for a Canada PR visa as the first step. For that, you have to undergo Canada immigration.
