Canada has recently been hard at work to help you do Canada immigration faster and with minimum hassles. A major issue plaguing the country’s immigration scene is the huge backlog that has to be cleared at the earliest.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has already taken steps to tackle this issue. Working in this direction, a task force has been set up that’s constituted by a committee of cabinet ministers. Coming to the latest developments in this scenario, we get to hear that Sean Fraser, Canada’s Immigration Minister, has brought many remedial measures to the spotlight to reduce immigration application backlogs. These measures include:

  • Recruiting new processing staff
  • Introducing new digitized applications
  • Implementing solutions based on technology

As per IRCC information, about 2.4 million Canada immigration applications are remaining to be processed. These are the backlogs IRCC has to clear.

IRCC’s steps to solve the issue

  • IRCC will recruit 1,250 new employees to raise its processing capacity. This will be done to improve the system in the long term.
  • These new employees will have helped in achieving reduced wait times and returning to client service standards in the pre-pandemic period. This will be achieved for clients in critical areas.

The service standards mentioned above include:

  • the 6-month service standard for the Express Entry Canada PR pathway
  • the 12-month service standard for family reunification via spousal sponsorship as well as Canada PR cards
At the end of July 2022, about 54% of applications with IRCC were identified as being in the backlog. The aim of IRCC is to process 80% of all new immigration applications by adhering to the service standards that existed in the pre-pandemic period.

Among measures taken will include keeping Canadians updated on reducing the backlogs and every month publish data on its website. IRCC will also share added information on additional measures taken for managing backlogs.

Other measures that will reduce the shortage of labor in Canada

Lately, Fraser had announced measures to address the shortage of labor in Canada. This was just four months prior to the latest announcement of the recruitment of labor to handle backlogs.

These measures include:

  • Resuming Express Entry draws in July 2022 read more
  • A new temporary policy to give international students who recently graduated and held expiring PGWP the opportunity to stay longer in Canada read more
  • Extending a temporary public policy allowing visitors in Canada to apply for a work permit that’s employer-specific until the end of February 2023
  • Policy changes that benefit those who filed an application for permanent residence through the TR to PR pathway read more
