Updated July 25 2023

Canada immigration will launch new immigration pathways on May 6, 2021, that are meant for skilled foreign workers in essential occupations. These include healthcare workers, cleaners, and cashiers.

TFWs in 135 essential occupations can apply for the new Canada PR pathways. Skilled workers at work in Canada outside Quebec will get permanent residency in Canada via the new program.

The new program will be open until November 5, 2021. This will otherwise be until workers are recruited to 20,000 vacancies for healthcare workers and 30,000 vacancies for other essential workers.

French speakers could be eligible for the pathway for French-speaking TFW in essential occupations. The vacancies for this program are unlimited.

Eligibility

To be eligible for this pathway, candidates must:

  • Have at least a year’s work experience within the past 3 years in an occupation classified as essential. These are 40 for jobs in healthcare and 95 for others.
  • If not a year’s full-time work experience, an equivalent part-time work experience (minimum 1,560 work hours) working in an occupation classified as essential.

Candidates applying under both streams must be working in Canada in any job at the time of submitting the application. Unless the candidate is a medical doctor, he/she cannot be self-employed. The doctor must work in a fee-for-service manner with a health authority.

The candidates applying under these new immigration pathways must be living in Canada on a valid temporary status or must have eligibility for restoration. The candidates are expected to have the intention to immigrate to a Canadian province except for Quebec.

The candidates will need a CLB 4 in all language abilities in French or English. Candidates in the French stream must have NCLC 4 to be eligible.

Besides all these criteria, the candidates must be free of criminal or medical charges and declared admissible to Canada.

The occupations considered eligible by IRCC for Stream A (healthcare workers) and Stream B (essential workers in other jobs) are:
