Canada has been welcoming immigrants for a long time. The country has also helped immigrants integrate into Canadian society.

Since 2001, there have been 221,352 and 262,236 immigrants coming into Canada every year.

In 2017, under the Multi-year Immigration Levels Plan, Canada announced that it planned to welcome 1 million immigrants in the next 3 years. In 2020, the number of immigrants will increase to 340,000.

There are three reasons that the Canadian Govt. is encouraging immigration:

  1. Social: Canada welcomes migrants who already have close family members living in the country
  1. Humanitarian: Canada is open to welcoming asylum seekers and refugees provided they meet the eligibility requirements
  1. Economic: Canada encourages migrants to work and settle permanently in the country thereby contributing to economic growth

Immigration Trends

The number of immigrants coming to Canada peaked in 1993 and continues to rise. More than 90% of the immigrant population prefer to settle down around larger cities like Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver. Immigrants account for 7% of the population of Toronto and Vancouver and 5% for Montreal’s population.

A comparison between Canada and the US shows that most immigrants in the US are from Latin America. Whereas, in Canada, maximum immigrants come from Asia particularly from countries like India, Pakistan, China and the Philippines.

Country-wise analysis

Country-wise analysis of the country of origin of immigrants reveals that in the 1970s most of the immigrants were European. However, Canada now has immigrants from over 20 countries in the world.

As per a 2016 analysis, the maximum number of immigrants in Canada came from Indian. China and the Philippines were next in line, as per CIC News.

Canada plans to continue to welcome immigrants in the future while acknowledging their valuable contribution to the economy.
