Canadians can sponsor parents, grandparents under PGP in 2021

IRCC has announced that it will use the randomized selection process for the sponsorship program for PGP in 2021. The 3-week period of intake for Interest to Sponsor forms for 2020 has expired on November 3, 2020. The sponsorship applications which will be a result of the fall 2020 period of intake will be received in early 2021.

The PGP program under Canada immigration allows Australian PRs and citizens to sponsor their parents or grandparents to bring them to Canada to live them permanently.

IRCC will accept up to 10,000 sponsorship applications in 2021 for the 2020 PGP. All applications received before the end of December 2020 will be considered towards this cap on applications for PGP.

In 2021, the PGP application intake will increase to 30,000, which is the current number that’s speculated. This may change as per instructions from the immigration minister.

In case those who have submitted an interest to sponsor in 2020, but haven’t been invited, could be invited in an upcoming year if they reapplied. The applications for PGP sponsorship are processed on a FIFO basis. Hence, the old PGP applications in the inventory will be processed before new applications are taken up when the PGP reopens in 2021.

Next time when the Interest to Sponsor forms become available, interested candidates can use it to inform the Canada immigration department that they are interested to sponsor their parents or grandparents. A copy of the applicant’s status in Canada will have to be uploaded online along with the form. This will enable IRCC to identify duplicate form submissions.

In response to the Interest to Sponsor forms submitted, IRCC will randomly choose from among the forms and invite people to apply for the PGP. This is possible if the form has been submitted during the intake period that will be stipulated.

Sponsors who receive the ITA will have 60 days from the date of receipt of the invite to submit their application for sponsorship and Canada PR application package. The ITA is non-transferrable. In case IRCC fails to reach the applicants or sponsors by email, the agents will send a printed copy of the email via post to the sponsor’s mailing address.
