Highlights:

  • Canada aims to digitize the immigration process.
  • Few applicants staying in Canada are exempt from medical examinations.
  • By 2023, seven additional immigration programs would be implemented.

Abstract: Canada plans to digitize the application for immigration.

On September 1, 2022, Sean Fraser, the immigration minister of Canada announced new online services for the immigration system of Canada. It intends to improve the user experience and lessen the backlogs.

The pandemic brought to light the requirement for a streamlined immigration system. The IRCC or Immigration Refugees and Citizenship Canada center in New Waterford, Nova Scotia, gave out updates on how digitization is impacting immigration operations.

Recent Changes in the Canada Immigration Process

Here are the recent developments for new immigrants and future citizens:

  • Digitization of the Immigration Process

The applications for immigration are going to turn entirely digital in September 2022. 23IRCC will start to transition to a completely digital form for the Canada PR or permanent residency programs from September 23, 2022.

Alternative methods will be available for those candidates who need accommodation.

  • More programs to have application status trackers

By 2023, seven more temporary residences and Canada PR programs will have the application status tracker. It was done with the partner, spousal, and dependent child sponsorship applications. The status tracker for citizenship applications was launched in May 2021. The same feature had been applied for access to representatives.

IRCC is refining its online processing time to offer more precise information. It would be implemented in the fall of this year.

  • Few applicants exempt from Medical Examination

To reduce the waiting period, permanent and temporary resident candidates who are already living in Canada are exempted from the medical examination required for the immigration process. The measure applies to only those people who meet specific criteria. The criteria have not been specified.

IRCC projects that it would impact around 180,000 new immigrants.

Canada had previously not held the medical examination requirement from June 2021 to March 2022.

1,250 new employees have been hired to help speed up the processing capacity.

Modernizing Canadian Citizenship

In August 2021, IRCC launched a mechanism that allowed a few citizenship applications to be registered online. The tool facilitates groups of adults aged 18 and above to apply together. IRCC aims to expand the tool to give access to online applications for minors below the age of 18.

Over 300,000 Canada PR statuses has been issued in 2022
