Canada GSS visa

How can employers in Canadian companies find the best-skilled workers among foreign nationals to work for them? Definitely, a fast and predictable process of visa processing will contribute to realizing this intention. That’s what GSS (Global Skills Strategy) does with the GSS work permit.

IRCC applies a definite and streamlined strategy to ensure that employers in Canada get skilled and talented candidates through steps that include

  • Faster application processing times,
  • Exemptions on the work permit, and
  • Enhanced customer service.

Though select foreign nationals get faster visa processing under GSS, they are required to meet the basic requirements for eligibility and admission to Canada. These requirements include obtaining and submitting police certificates as well as any other essential documents stipulated by IRCC.

If immigration candidates meet all the requirements, they will get their Global Skills Strategy Work Permit processed within a Global Skills Strategy processing time of 2 weeks.

Global Skills Strategy visa

The strategy for realizing faster visa processing times includes certain well-planned measures. Here’s how each of them works for you under the Global Skills Strategy program.

Eligibility criteria

Immigration candidates who are eligible for faster 2-week visa processing under GSS include candidates who don’t require an LMIA for eligibility and those who don’t. Here are the Global Skills Strategy eligibility criteria for both categories of applicants.

LMIA-exempt workers

If you are a candidate who is exempt from the LMIA (Labor Market Impact Assessment) requirement, you can become eligible for the 2-week visa processing facility under the GSS by meeting all the following criteria:

  • You are lodging an application from outside Canada.
  • You are engaged in a job that’s categorized as either NOC (National Occupational Classification) skill type 0 or A. Type 0 is for managerial jobs and type A is for professionals as per the NOC.
  • The employer recruiting you have submitted employment offers through the employer portal. They must also have paid the necessary fee for employer compliance.

Note that GSS processing is not available for International Experience Canada.

Owing to the change from NOC 2016 to NOC 2021 (TEER) will be in place from November 16, 2022, the following updates must be noted:

  • NOC skill type 0 will be replaced by TEER 0
  • NOC skill level A will be replaced by TEER 1

If your application for a visa is lodged on or after November 16, 2022, it’s necessary that your occupation is either in the category of TEER 0 or 1. Only then you will have Global Skills Strategy eligibility.

Visa applicants under the International Experience Canada won’t be eligible for fast processing under the Global Skills Strategy program.

Workers exempt from LMIA can qualify for two-week processing of their work permit application if they meet all of these requirements:

Persons who need an LMIA

If you are among those Canada visa applicants who need an LMIA for a Canada visa, you must meet the following requirements to be eligible for GSS:

  • You have to apply from outside of Canada
  • You must have a positive LMIA via the GSS Stream of the TFW (Temporary Foreign Worker) Program. The LMIA information will be present in the LMIA decision letter.

Spouses and dependents

Besides yourself, the GSS 2-week processing will be available for the following members of your family:

  • Common-law partner
  • Spouse
  • Dependent children

These family members will have to lodge their completed applications for a visa simultaneously with you. The visas on which GSS processing is applicable include:

  • Visitor visa
  • Study permit
  • Work permit

GSS visa's requirements

  • Include police certificates (in case it’s required).
