Highlights: The announcement of Canada’s Tech Talent Strategy

  • The Minister of Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship (IRCC) announced the introduction of the Tech Talent Stream.
  • The Tech Talent Stream is Canada’s first-of-a-kind initiative unveiled at the Collision 2023.
  • The announcement was made on June 27, 2023, at the top Tech conference in North America.
  • New measures and developments have been taken as a part of the Tech Strategy.
  • The Tech Talent Strategy was proposed to support and promote businesses in Canada.

The latest Measures taken via Tech Talent Strategy

Sean Fraser announced new improvements and measures as a part of the Tech Talent Strategy. The new addition of measures taken to promote businesses is as follows:

  • H-1B specialty occupation visa holders in the USA can now avail of the Open work permit stream. They can apply for a Canada work permit with the option of having their family accompany them and possibly pursuing studies in Canada.
  • Canada will be promoted as a destination for digital nomads.
  • Additional ITAs will be issued via the STEM-specific draws under Category-based sections for Express Entry.
  • Work permits issued under the Global Skilled Strategy will have a service standard of 14 days.
  • The Innovation stream under the IMP program for highly competent individuals will have the following options –
    • Highly skilled workers in selective in-demand occupations will have open work permit access for up to five years.
    • Workers employed by Government- recognized companies that add to the innovation goals of the industry could avail of employer-specific work permits for up to five years.

New Improvements to the Start-up Visa program

The new measures taken for the Start-up Visa program are as follows:

  • The Start-Up Visa program will have more spots with increased plans for 2023 & 2024.
  • Candidates can now apply for work permits with 3-year duration.
  • Candidates can apply for an open work permit that allows them to seek employment even outside of their own start-up business.
  • Every member who is a part of the entrepreneurial team will have access to the 3-year open-work permit option.
  • Applications backed by angel investor groups, venture capitals, and business accelerators will be prioritized.
  • Applications backed by the business Tech Network members of Canada will be prioritized.
