Relief to foreign students as Quebec extends CAQ

The Quebec Acceptance Certificate (CAQ) is necessary for most of the foreign students and temporary workers who want to live in Quebec. This must be obtained by those who wish to study in Quebec, even before they apply for the Study permit Canada. Due to the COVID-19 scenario, many of the students have been facing the expiry of their CAQ.

Now, the Government of Quebec has decided to automatically extend CAQs that expire between 30th April 2020 and 31st December 2020.

The MIFI (Ministry of Immigration, Francization, and Integration) announced the decision on 30th April 2020. The decision was a response to the concerns plaguing many of its partners in the education sector as the current pandemic rages.

The decision will help in carrying on with the steps to be taken by foreign students who are about to complete their studies, but courses are stalled owing to the COVID-19 situation.

The Immigration Ministry of Quebec is trying to avoid penalties for those in Quebec to study in Canada. COVID-19 has indefinitely delayed their courses, set to complete in the summer or winter of 2020. With automatic, fee waived renewal of CAQs, students will find it easier to renew their Canada study visa with the federal government. This is owing to them not required to face the renewal process of CAQ.

Students now have the option to submit their application to the federal government as early as possible to extend their study permit. That will be required under the study in Canada requirements. They can thus finish their studies for the part not yet completed when their course resume after the COVID crisis dissipates.

The new measure announced is not applicable to students who want to get a CAQ for the fall semester. It is also not applicable to students who have a CAQ that has an expiry after 31st December 2020.
