Quebec pledges $55 million to help businesses recruit foreign workers

Quebec has pledged $55 million to help businesses in the province hire temporary foreign workers. Labour Minister, Jean Boulet, said that $20.9 million of the allotted budget will be used to help Quebec employers to hire overseas workers.

Quebec is facing its highest labour shortage in 40 years and has the highest job vacancy rate in Canada.

A large number of Quebec employers are now turning to overseas workers to meet their workforce needs. There was a 36% increase in Work Permits in 2018 as compared to 2017.

On 26th August, Quebec announced that it plans to partially subsidize international recruitment by businesses in Quebec. The Quebec Govt. will also cover up to $1000 in relocation expenses for temporary foreign workers.

Quebec also announced that it will support around 2,000 businesses in the province to recruit temporary foreign workers.

$33.9 million of the allotted budget will go to 2 programs which help foreign workers integrate into Quebec society. These programs are:

Mr Boulet acknowledged that businesses in the province are struggling with a labour shortage and hence turning to overseas workers. The new measures will help temporary foreign workers integrate well into the labour market of the province.

Quebec had recently reduced its immigration intake which attracted a lot of criticism.

The Chambers of Commerce Federation says that Quebec needs 60,000 migrants annually. However, the new admission target will only admit 40,000 in 2019 which is 20,000 less than what is actually needed.

The Quebec Govt. says that the immigration policies of the province will ensure only those candidates come in who meet the labour needs of the province. The policies will also ensure that immigrants who do come in integrate well into the Quebec workforce.
