Updated July 25 2023

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the need for healthcare workers has increased considerably. Thankfully, Canada immigration has many pathways that aim at roping in such healthcare professionals.

One of those healthcare professionals is nurses. They fall under the following categories:

  • Registered nurses & registered psychiatric nurses (Skill level A) - NOC 3012
  • Licensed practical nurses (Skill level B) - NOC 3233

The type of immigration program a particular nurse is eligible for depends on the skill level.

Canada launched 6 new immigration streams for those who work in Canada. Of these, 2 are dedicated to healthcare workers including nurses. Of the 2, one is particularly for those who speak French. Nurses can even use the pathways for international students.

Canada is accepting up to 20,000 new Canada PR visa holders at work in positions in the healthcare industry. For this, a temporary program will be starting on May 6, 2021. The window for accepting applications to the program will close on November 5, 2021, or when the immigrant intake reaches the maximum limit. Whichever will happen first will be considered.

The stream for French speakers is open to take in an unlimited number of Canada PR.

Eligible candidates must have a year’s Canadian work experience. The experience should be in one of the 40 healthcare jobs deemed eligible. The candidates must also be working when they apply.

Coming to language skill requirements, to be eligible, candidates will need a minimum CLB or NCLC score of 4.

These pathways for nurses exist both at the federal and provincial levels.

Nurses intake via Express Entry

The existing federal economic immigration programs of Canada namely CERC and FSWP are helpful in bringing nurses to the country.

Intake via FSWP

  • Candidates must have a year’s continuous work experience in NOC A, B, or 0 levels.
  • The experience must be gained within 10 years of applying.
  • The candidates must score CLB 7 in English or level 7 in NCLC in French in all language skills.
  • They must also score a minimum of 67/100 on the six-factor test.

Intake via CEC

  • Candidates must have a year’s continuous work experience in NOC A, B, or 0 levels.
  • The experience must be gained within 3 years of applying.
  • The candidates applying with NOC level 0 or A jobs must score CLB/NCLC 7.
  • The candidates applying with NOC level B jobs must score CLB/NCLC 5.
  • Candidates need no job offer to qualify for the program.

Nurses intake via PNP

Nurses can migrate to Canada via provincial draws too. Provincial nominations can be given to nurses who are among the most in-demand workers required in many Canadian provinces. Here are some pathways for nurses to follow:

  • New Brunswick IEN
  • British Columbia’s Healthcare Professional (Express Entry & Skills Immigration pathways)
  • Quebec Experience Program
  • Quebec’s Regular Skilled Worker Program
