New Work Limits for International Students

The Government of Canada has announced new work limits for students, allowing them to work 24 hours per week from September 2024. Marc Miller, the immigration minister, stated, "Canada's rules need to be aligned, or we will find our programs attracting more and more applicants whose primary intent is to work and not study."

The new work limit introduced by the Canadian Government aims to focus the international student program on studying rather than working. Critics anticipate that allowing foreign students to work will eventually make the study permit an unofficial work permit, failing its purpose.

Foreign students reported that the paid work helps them pay for their studies. The working hours are to be revised into 20 hours per week until September 2024.

Note: The work-limit cap is inapplicable to students working while they are not actively enrolled in class, such as during summer breaks.
