Australia’s 5 main targeted constituencies

In a press meet with the National Press Club, Claire O'Neil suggested two significant changes with six critical pointers that will be addressed.

Increase in the Minimum labour wages

  • The minimum salary for immigrants will be increased from the 1st of July, 2023.
  • The decision to increase was also taken to support immigrants seeking sponsorship from an Australian employer.
  • The Temporary Skilled Migration Income Threshold (TSMIT) was fixed at a rate of $53,000 for the past ten years.
  • The revised Temporary Skilled Migration Income Threshold (TSMIT) will be increased to $70,000.

PR Pathways

  • Temporary skilled workers can now apply for Australian permanent residency (PR).
  • The new changes for temporary skilled workers will be implemented towards the end of 2023.
  • As per the reports, a total of 2.1 million temporary skilled immigrants are currently residing in Australia.

Three latest migration tiers

Three principal levels that have been finalized for migration are given below –

  • Light touch tier
  • Mainstream skilled pathway
  • For essential industries

A light touch tier:

  • This will streamline the immigration process for workers who earn high wages.
  • The new change is taken to improve the long processing time for the highly skilled worker visas.

Mainstream skilled pathway:

  • This is primarily for middle-income earners that will most likely see a hike in the wage threshold.
  • This will also focus on addressing the labor shortages in the country while bringing in fresh ways of managing them.

For essential industries:

  • This is to control the entry of low-earning migrants migrating to Australia to work in the primary industries.
