Canada's latest budget features proposals to boost immigration

The Government of Canada has just tabled its first budget since 2019. The budget features the policies worked on by the government and the priorities assigned to them. It will also reveal the projections on government spending and revenue. An overview of the state of the Canadian economy is also a part of the budget.

The following points added to the importance of this budget:

  • This was the first budget presented in over 2 years
  • It’s an important pitch for Canada’s ruling party considering their plans to call an early election in 2021

It’s not uncommon for the budget to have major announcements on major Canada immigration policy. Here are some of the announcements made in the latest budget:

  • The Canadian government has proposed an investment of $430 million to modernize its IT infrastructure. A replacement for GCMS, which’s currently used to manage applications for immigration, was called for.
  • In a major reform to Canada Express Entry, the government proposed to hand to the immigration minister increased authority. This authority will be used to select the immigration candidates who meet the country’s labor market requirements in the best way.
  • Additional spending to the tune of $110 million over the next 3 years was proposed to enhance the TFWP. The money will be used to:
    • Give information and support to foreign workers considered vulnerable
    • Increase inspections of employers to make sure that foreign workers are treated well under them and improving the delivery of service to vulnerable workers helping them obtain open work permits in case of abuse suffered from their employers
  • $15 million was proposed to be spent in the next 2 years on such initiatives that aim at helping discriminated new women immigrants to improve their job outcomes and advancement in their careers.
  • There was a reference to new immigration programs launched by IRCC for speeding up the processes of the pathways to international graduates and essential workers. Around 90,000 foreigners residing in Canada could apply for Canada PR from May 6, 2021.
