Canada is setting the stage for the arrival of 1.3 million Permanent Residents in the next 2 years. The country is all set to increase its immigration targets for 2019 and 2020. A report by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) was made public on October 31. The news was announced as part of that report. They have extended their multi-year levels plan by another year. It has positioned Canada to welcome over 1.3 million newcomers through various Immigration categories between 2018 and 2021. The targets for 2019 and 2020 were originally set at 330,000 and 340,000 respectively. However, it has been now increased to 330,800 and 341,000. Ahmed Hussen, Minister of IRCC, has said that Canada is looking to welcome more talented and skilled workers through this plan. They are willing to recruit people with the expertise that their economy needs. They even plan on reuniting more family members and accommodating refugees who want to start new lives.

Economic Immigration Programs

Canada has expanded the number of admissions through its two Immigration programs - Express Entry and Provincial Nominee Program. The Express Entry system manages a pool of candidates. It, in turn, caters to their three main Immigration categories —
  • Skilled Worker Class
  • Skilled Trades Class
  • Canadian Experience Class
Nearly a quarter of the 1.3 million new Permanent Residents are supposed to come through Express Entry. The Provincial Nominee Program, on the other hand, is expected to bring 19 percent of the target. However, PNP admission rate might go up to 20.2 percent of overall target for 2021. According to CIC News, 60 percent of the 1.3 million Permanent Residents may arrive through the Economic Immigration programs. The emphasis on Economic Immigration addresses many challenges Canada is facing now. The ageing population and a declining birth rate are the two most prominent issues among them.

Family Reunification

The multi-year levels plan also caters to Immigrant’s need of family reunification. IRCC is planning to increase the number of admissions through its spouses, partners and children category. The target for 2021 is 70,000. The target for parents and grandparents sponsorship is set at 21,000. On the whole, Canada’s new Immigration plan is good news for aspiring Immigrants.
