Canada offers better prospects, many ways for immigrants

Ever since the COVID-19 related border restrictions have been imposed by Canada, only essential travel has been allowed across the border.

The essential nature of travel should be proven by the traveler at the border to the Canadian Border Services Agency (CBSA).

Then there are those categories of travelers who are exempted from the border restrictions imposed on those who migrate to Canada. These include:

• Foreign relatives of Canadian citizens or permanent residents – they should stay in Canada for at least 15 days.
• Temporary workers employed in essential occupations - Those who are willing to work in Canada may use an accelerated authorization process for a work permit. Certain essential jobs are also been listed under priority processing.
• A certain class of International students – international students who want to join courses in the fall can do so, thanks to updates made to Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP). The students can complete their educational program at a Canadian designated learning institution (DLI). The students can do their courses online and stay eligible for PGWP.

But even the exempted categories must prove that their purpose of travel to Canada is essential. By ‘essential’ it means travel that is non- discretionary and non-optional.

The travelers arriving in Canada will have to go through a 14-day quarantine. The traveler must also present an adequate plan for quarantine.

When compared with the US, which is not welcoming immigrants and is moving towards scrapping the H-1B visa, Canada immigration offers more opportunities.

In fact, after the US has revealed its reluctance towards immigrants, many are looking at Canada as the next best option to go for.

Canada has kept on with its immigration programs. It has continued to welcome skilled immigrants through various streams throughout the COVID-19 crisis.

The federal government and provinces run more than 80 pathways for skilled workers under the economic class to arrive in Canada.

The most common way that has been offered for immigrants to get permanent residence (PR) is via the Express Entry program.

The next way is the Canada PNP  (Provincial Nominee Program). In May 2020, over 2,000 invitations to apply (ITA) have been issued to immigrant applicants. In June 2020, 1,000 ITAs have already been issued to candidates via PNP.

The applicants from the US has a distinct advantage due to many reasons including:

• Fluency in speaking English
• High level of education
• Professional experience
