Job opportunities in smaller cities in Canada are available in great numbers through the provincial nomination program. Immigrants should opt for permanent residency through this program.  In keeping with the increasing applicants for immigration and popularity of the provincial nominee programs, the Government has apportioned additional nomination for the provinces annually. Provincial Nominee Program (PNPs) is one of the most important pathways for permanent residency to Canada with over 200, 000 applications between 2019 and 2021. The PNP model has been successful with the percentage of new entrants to the larger cities going down from 85% to 70% in recent years.

Many of the large cities in Canada have launched their own program for nomination in their provinces depending on the skills that are in demand in their regions. They release their occupation lists of skills that are in demand and nominate those applicants who meet their eligibility criteria to settle down in their regions. These applicants are not required to meet the labour market needs. The popularity of the provincial nominee program has driven Ontario to launch a new Regional Immigration program in early 2020.

To promote regional cities, the Canadian government launched two programs. The Atlantic Immigration Pilot Program (AIPP) and the Rural and Northern Immigration Program. It also plans to introduce a Municipal Nominee Program (MNP).

AIPP - is a pilot program for overseas inhabitants to work in the four Atlantic Provinces. These provinces are Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Newfoundland, Labrador, and Prince Edward Island. The program enables immigrants to fill the labor shortage in these provinces

RNIP - is a community-driven program. This program means to bring skilled workers to rural communities. The program offers communities an opportunity to work with employers and offer employment to skilled workers.

Small cities preferred over larger cities

Smaller cities in regional areas offer affordable housing. The standard of living is comfortable. The government is propagating the advantages of building a life outside large cities. This will help immigrants to look at settling in the smaller cities as a positive option.

Job opportunities in many smaller cities in Canada

Job opportunities are good in smaller cities. The probability to find jobs is good as the unemployment rate is low.

The cost of living is very high in cities like Vancouver and Toronto. The average rent for a two-bedroom flat is $ 1800 and $ 1600. This is quite high even for a person earning well. Rent for a two-bedroom apartment in regional Canada is more affordable. This will help those immigrants with lower salary save big on their accommodation.

An immigrant will enjoy a superior standard of living in smaller cities than in bigger cites. Commuting time is less stressful as traffic is manageable. Immigrants can pursue activities that interest them. These cities offer recreational and cultural activities like those in Toronto and Vancouver. They can indulge in outdoor activities. This includes hiking, skiing, and interaction with other residents.  The communities are small and close-knit in the region.

Prospective immigrants should consider living in smaller cities. There are good job opportunities, affordable housing and a comfortable standard of living.
