Canada immigration to exceed expectations; 471,000 newcomers in 2022

What’s interesting about Canada immigration these days? Given the current trend, we are waiting to see how much will the target number for newcomers be exceeded each year. This is true for 2022 already!

What’s the IRCC data telling us?

If we look at IRCC’s most recent Canada immigration data, it can be seen that in September 2022, the number of newcomers invited increased by 30.7 percent compared to August 2022. Here's the number for more clarity:

The spike in the number of immigrants in September 2022 was the strongest immigration performance in 2022 when taken on a monthly basis.

The number of newcomers in Canada in the first nine months of 2022 was 353,840. The way Canada immigration is performing, there should be 471,787 newcomers welcomed into the country by the end of 2022. This will exceed the existing target for new immigrants in Canada as per the Canada immigration levels plan 2022-2024. As per the Levels Plan 2022-2024, Canada targets at bringing in 431,645 newcomers in 2022.

In the Canada Immigration Levels Plan 2022-2024, the target count for new immigrants is 447,055. As per the latest Levels Plan 2023-2025, this target has been reset to 465,000. In 2024, this will be 485,000, and 500,000 in 2025.

Zooming in on the gains in 2022

Almost every province in Canada except Prince Edward Island had significant gains in immigration.

Ontario registered the biggest absolute rise in immigration in the month of September 2022 compared to the previous month. There were 4,555 more newcomers in that month which was a rise of almost 32.8 percent.

The highest rise in the percentage of immigration on a monthly basis in September 2022 was seen in the Northwest Territories of Canada. Alberta recorded the highest percentage of increase in immigration on a monthly basis with a 47.7 percent jump to reach 4,925 newcomers.
