How TOEFL Is Scored: The 1–6 Scale and MyBest Score

The TOEFL iBT uses a 1–6 scoring scale, with scores reported in 0.5 increments and aligned with CEFR proficiency levels. During the transition period until January 2028, score reports also include a comparable score on the previous 0–120 scale. The overall score is calculated by averaging the four section scores and rounding to the nearest half band.

MyBest Score combines your highest section scores from valid tests taken within the past two years, although acceptance depends on the university. Y-Axis TOEFL coaching helps you understand the scoring system, practise each section and prepare for your target score.

TOEFL Validity, Retake Policy and Recent Test Changes

A TOEFL iBT score is valid for two years from the test date. The test can be retaken as many times as needed, with a minimum gap of three days between attempts. Each retake requires a new registration fee. The TOEFL iBT introduced an updated test format and 1–6 scoring scale in 2026. Reading and Listening are adaptive, and new question types have been added across the four sections. During the transition period, score reports also include a comparable score on the previous 0–120 scale.

Y-Axis TOEFL coaching helps you understand the latest test changes, practise updated question types and prepare for your target score.
