German Language

About German Language

German is the most widely spoken native language in the European Union and an important language for study, work and life in Germany. German language skills can support university admission, skilled employment, Ausbildung and immigration, and can also help you earn additional points for the Germany Opportunity Card. German is structured across six CEFR levels, from A1 (beginner) to C2 (proficient), each measuring your ability across Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking. Top recognised providers like the Goethe-Institut, telc, TestDaF, and ÖSD provide the certification, with exams available locally in the UAE.

How Long Does It Take to Learn German from A1 to B2?

Reaching B2 German from beginner level usually takes around 9–12 months with regular and structured study. A1 and A2 generally take 2–3 months each, while B1 and B2 require more time as language skills become more advanced. The actual timeline depends on your study hours, learning pace, consistency and starting level. Y-Axis German coaching provides structured preparation from A1 to B2, with expert guidance and targeted practice to help you progress towards your target level.

German Level Estimated Study Hours Typical Duration
A1 60–150 hours 2–3 months

B1 260–490 hours 4–8 months
B2 450–600 hours 9–12 months

Self-Study vs German Coaching: Which Is Better for German Preparation?

Self-study can help you build basic vocabulary and grammar, but German coaching provides structured lessons, expert trainer guidance, regular practice and mock tests for more focused progress. Areas such as word order, cases, pronunciation and speaking can be challenging to improve on your own, especially when preparing for a German language exam or planning to migrate to Germany.

Y-Axis German coaching combines structured training, personalised feedback and exam-focused practice across Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking to help you build your German skills and prepare confidently for your target level.

The Germany Opportunity Card requires at least A1-level German or B2-level English to meet the language requirement. A higher level of German can also help you earn more points: A2 gives 1 point, B1 gives 2 points, and B2 or higher gives 3 points. Under the points-based route, you need to score at least 6 points in total to meet eligibility criteria for the Opportunity Card. Y-Axis German coaching helps you prepare for A1 to B2 German with structured lessons, expert guidance and regular practice.

German Level Points Awarded
A1 0 points
A2 1 point
B1 2 points
B2 or higher 3 points

German Language Requirements for the EU Blue Card in Germany

The EU Blue Card does not require German language proficiency for the application. A recognised university degree and a qualifying job offer that meets the required salary threshold are generally needed instead. However, German proficiency can help you reach permanent residence sooner: A1-level German can reduce the required period to 27 months, while B1-level German can reduce it to 21 months. Y-Axis German coaching helps you build your German skills from A1 to B1 and beyond with structured lessons, expert guidance and regular practice.

German Language Requirements for Ausbildung in Germany

Ausbildung in Germany generally requires German language proficiency, with most programmes expecting at least B1 level. Some programmes, particularly healthcare-related Ausbildung, may require B2 German because of the communication demands of the training and workplace. The exact language level can vary depending on the Ausbildung programme and employer. Y-Axis German coaching helps you prepare for B1 or B2 German with structured lessons, expert guidance and regular practice.

*Want to work in Germany? Let Y-Axis guide you through application process.

German Language Requirements for Nurses in Germany

Nurses seeking professional recognition in Germany generally need B2-level German, while some pathways, such as the Recognition Partnership, allow qualified nurses to enter with A2-level German and complete their professional recognition and language training in Germany. B2 German is typically required for nursing registration and professional practice after recognition. Y-Axis German coaching helps nurses progress from A2 to B2 German with structured lessons, expert guidance and regular practice.

German Language Requirements to Study in Germany

Most German-taught university programmes in Germany require B2 or C1 German, as students need to understand lectures, participate in discussions and complete academic work in German. The exact German level can vary depending on the university and study programme. German proficiency can also help with daily communication and part-time work while studying in Germany.

Y-Axis German coaching helps you prepare for B2 German with structured lessons, expert guidance and regular practice.

German Language Tests: Goethe-Zertifikat, TestDaF, telc and ÖSD

Goethe-Zertifikat is widely used for the Opportunity Card, Ausbildung and citizenship, TestDaF is mainly used for university admission, and telc offers general and profession-specific exams such as telc Medizin and telc Pflege. ÖSD is commonly used for German-language requirements in Austria.

Goethe-Zertifikat exams are available through official test centres in Dubai and Abu Dhabi. Y-Axis German coaching helps you prepare for the test required for your chosen pathway with structured lessons and exam-focused practice.

Goethe-Zertifikat Exam Format and Scoring

The Goethe-Zertifikat exam tests four German language skills: Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking. The exam format and duration depend on the level. A1 and A2 are non-modular exams, while B1 to C2 are modular, allowing candidates to take individual modules separately. Applicants generally need at least 60% in each module to pass.

Y-Axis German coaching helps you prepare for the Goethe-Zertifikat with level-specific lessons, exam practice and guidance on the test format and timing.

Level Exam Duration Exam Structure Passing Score
A1 70–80 minutes Complete exam 60%
A2 90 minutes Complete exam 60%
B1 180 minutes Modular 60% per module
B2 190 minutes Modular 60% per module
C1 205–210 minutes Modular 60% per module

Goethe-Zertifikat Validity and Retakes

Goethe-Zertifikat certificates do not expire, but some universities, employers and authorities may require a certificate issued within a specific period, such as the last two years. Exam results are generally available within 4–6 weeks, although the exact processing time depends on the exam centre and level. There is no fixed limit on retakes, and for B1 to C2 exams, you can retake an individual module without repeating the entire exam.

Y-Axis German coaching helps you prepare for the Goethe-Zertifikat with structured lessons, exam-focused practice and guidance tailored to your target level.
