Salary requirements increased for several UK visas

The UK Government has implemented recent changes to streamline the immigration process in the UK. The salary threshold has been increased for several UK visas.

 

 Skilled Worker Visas

The minimum salary requirement for applicants under the points-based system (PBS) is currently at £38,700. The salary threshold for skilled worker visas increased by 50% from the previous salary requirement of a minimum £26,200.

 

Under the Canada CRS score calculator, Skilled Worker visa applicants are required to have 70 points. Applicants must secure at least 50 points from a job offer above a minimum skill level and English language proficiency. The remaining 20 points can be accumulated from factors like having a Ph.D. in a relevant subject, higher salary, and job position in sectors dealing with labor shortages.

Family Visas

Individuals who wish to live with their relatives in the UK for more than six months must meet the minimum salary threshold. Family visa applicants are required to have a minimum salary of £34,500 initially, which would gradually increase to £38,700. The UK Government revised its decision to increase the salary requirement to £ 38,700 directly following certain concerns.

Exceptions and Renewals

The following applicants are exempted from the new salary threshold in the UK:

 

• Family visa renewal applicants
• Applicants employed as teachers or working in the social care or healthcare sectors.

 

Note: The new rule does not allow overseas foreign workers to bring their dependent family members with them in the UK

 

Changes in the UK Student Visa

The following changes were proposed for the student visa applicants willing to bring their family members along:

 

• Students cannot bring their dependents along if they are not enrolled in a research program in the UK.
• Students with a doctoral degree under a graduate visa can bring their dependents if they have completed their degree to live in the UK for two to three years.

Shortage Occupation List

Recent changes announced to the Shortage Occupations List are:

 

• Occupations listed under the Shortage Occupations list are to be reduced
• An annual healthcare surcharge of £1,035 per year is to be paid by the visa applicants from April 2024
• The rule allowing employers to pay 80% of the usual rate to foreign workers has been done away with.
