As a developed country with a positive reputation for accepting migrants, a robust economy, numerous well-paid jobs, a modern lifestyle, and a high standard of living, Australia is often regarded as one of the finest places to live in the world. Several Australian cities appear in annual lists of the best cities to live globally, and Melbourne has been at the top of the rankings for several years.

The Australian economy is strong, and as a result, the Australian dollar is one of the world's strongest and safest currencies. Compared to other countries, Australia's minimum wage is high, which is good news for those looking for an overseas career.

Permanent residency in Australia

Australia offers a five-year Permanent Residency (PR) visa that allows you to work and live anywhere in the country. With a PR visa, you and your family can live here. After three years of living on a PR visa, you can apply for citizenship.

Advantages of having a PR visa

  • You have complete freedom to reside and travel across Australia.
  • You are eligible to continue your education and may be eligible for certain educational loans.
  • After two years as a PR visa holder, you can make use of Social Security benefits.
  • Your children will naturally become Australian citizens if they are born there.
  • You can sponsor your relatives' PR if they meet specific requirements.
  • You can apply for government jobs.
  • You can travel to New Zealand without applying for a visa.

The eligibility of immigration applications in Australia is determined using a points-based system. To be considered, you must first have the required eligibility points, a score of 65 or higher on a scale of 100. The scoring criteria are listed in the table below:

Category  Maximum Points
Age (25-33 years) 30 points
English proficiency (8 bands) 20 points

  Check your eligibility

To migrate to Australia, there are various visa sub-categories you can apply. The Australian government offers two major streams for the PR visa:

  • Skilled Stream
  • Family Stream

Skilled stream

Australia is open to welcoming skilled immigrants because they bring a higher level of education, are more likely to find suitable employment, and contribute to the economy. Employee-sponsored migrants are more likely to benefit the economy.

Most persons wish to migrate to Australia as skilled workers, and they do so through the Skilled Migration Program.

Eligibility requirements include:

  • Experience in a nominated occupation on Australia's Skilled Occupations List
  • Skill assessment report by a designated authority for that occupation
  • Age under 45 years
  • Meet basic requirements of the General Skilled Migration program
  • Score at least 65 on the points test
  • Meet health and character requirements

Migrating to Australia under any of these visas under the Skilled migration program will lead to permanent residency in Australia after a few years of stay.

Family stream

You can move to Australia under the family stream if a close relative is an Australian citizen or permanent resident. The family stream covers spouses/partners, dependent children, parents of citizens, and permanent residents of Australia. It also permits other family members to relocate to Australia to be with their families, such as elderly and dependent relatives, caregivers, and others.

Study in Australia

Australia has many reputed universities and institutions that rank among the top universities in the world. The Subclass 500 student visa allows you to study in Australia, bring your family with you, and apply online in or outside of Australia. Other benefits include the ability to move freely within and beyond the country. While studying for your degree, you can also work for up to 40 hours.

This visa is valid for five years, and you can also apply for an extension.

Work in Australia

Australia offers numerous work visa options for those who wish to work here. The visas are based on your skills or the type of employment you are looking for - permanent or temporary.

Those who come to work here have fundamental rights, and you, like other local employees, are covered by the same workplace protection rights. The standard of living and employee wages are high by global standards, and you can get free healthcare and other social benefits.
