Canada introduced new LMIA -exempt work permit

Canada has introduced a new LMIA-exempt work permit under the Innovation Stream of the International Mobility Program as part of its Tech Talent Strategy.

LMIA is an official document needed to support the insurance of some specific work permits. The Employment and Social Development Canada (ESDC) issues the document and assesses the hiring of foreign professionals in the Canadian labor market. The document must return a positive result for an LMIA to support an employer-specific work permit.

Eligibility criteria to apply for LMIA

This stream is accessible to eligible candidates both inside and outside Canada. To be eligible to apply for a work permit under the Innovation Stream, candidates must:

  • Get an employment letter from an participating employer of the Global Hyper-growth Project (GHP)
  • Receive an employment offer of high-skilled occupation, that has ranked in NOC Classification in TEER categories 0, 1, 2, or 3
  • Possess the necessary educational qualification and knowledge that is required for the occupation

Before submitting the application the eligible employer must submit their application to the innovation stream and present the following:

  • An offer letter
  • Employer compliance fee payment of CAD 230
  • Provide the employee with offer of employment number
