Finland drops Australia and Algeria from its list of third-country residents who have eligibility to enter the country. This decision was based on the epidemiological assessment as these countries no longer fit the criteria set by the Government of Finland.

The decision came on July 23, 2020, in a meeting in which it was also decided that internal border controls will be again imposed with Switzerland, Slovenia, and Austria.

Since July 13, 2020, the residents of the following countries have been eligible to visit Finland and enter its territory:

  • China
  • Uruguay
  • Tunisia
  • Thailand
  • South Korea
  • Rwanda
  • New Zealand
  • Japan
  • Georgia
  • Australia
  • Algeria

The eligibility decided was in line with the EU Council’s recommendation. In time, further evaluation of the epidemiological situation was done for these countries. It led to the latest decision of excluding Algeria and Australia from the list.

The new list goes like this:

  • China
  • Uruguay
  • Tunisia
  • Thailand
  • South Korea
  • Rwanda
  • New Zealand
  • Japan
  • Georgia

The traffic between Finland and these 9 countries has been restored without restrictions. Only in the case of China, the EU Council’s confirmation of sufficient reciprocity is needed. The government of Finland has again tightened the restrictions on external border traffic with Algeria and Australia.

Essential traffic including return traffic to Finland has been allowed at the external borders since July 13, 2020. Also allowed is transit traffic at airports. Family members of citizens of Finland can now enter the country and fulfil their Finland travel, no matter what their nationality is.

Permission to enter has also been given to berry pickers invited by companies in Finland. This could be through internal and external border traffic. Berry pickers from Thailand is allowed as per the country quota allocated to Finland previously. The quota announced earlier by the Thai authorities was 3,000 pickers.

The decisions of the government on border traffic restrictions will be subject to review in 2 weeks’ time if the pandemic situation permits. If it becomes necessary, new decisions will be made.
