News highlights:

  • New Zealand is working on bringing in 12,000 more skilled foreign nationals interested to work abroad over a one-year period.
  • The country is going ahead with a new working holiday scheme designed to fill vacancies in the labor market.
  • The steps taken by New Zealand will serve the dire need for talent faced by employers in the country.

New Zealand is among those countries that are considered best for employment. Like a host of other countries, New Zealand is also facing the need to find more skilled workers interested to work abroad. For this, the country had to increase its number of immigrants.

New Zealand will bring about temporary changes to the country’s immigration rules. The country will aim at attracting 12,000 workers over a period of one year. For this, New Zealand has come up with a working holiday scheme. This scheme is created to fill vacancies in the labor market with businesses trying hard to find enough employees.

The effects of the worker crunch

Employers in many world nations are facing a shortage of skilled people to undertake vacant jobs. In New Zealand, this crunch is raising wages and making it hard to overcome inflation. As a result, the interest rates are also high in the country.

The solution to labor requirements

The new working holiday scheme is instrumental in providing relief to employers in New Zealand facing a worker shortage. Besides this, wage rules have been relaxed for skilled foreign workers. The sectors in which this has been implemented include construction, hospitality, and tourism.

The country has also decided to extend the visas of certain working holiday makers residing onshore. The extension will be for a period of 6 months. This way, these workers will be retained in the country.

What the numbers say

The motivation behind implementing these new measures is evident from certain facts about the country’s economy. In the second quarter of 2022, the unemployment rate was at 3.3% which remained unchanged compared to the previous quarters, way back into the year 2021.

The wages went up by 3.4% in the second quarter of 2022 in New Zealand. This rise in the rate was the fastest in over a decade.

To combat inflation, New Zealand lifted the official cash rate by 50 points. After this, the rate reached 3%. This was the seventh consecutive hike that was done to tackle inflation.
