COVID-19 is the burning topic of the hour everywhere in the world. The crisis is far from loosening its grip, but the fight is on. The doctors and health workers are putting their best efforts into curing and stopping the spread of the disease.

It’s a time when there is a dearth of qualified medical and health professionals. Every country has its own way of ensuring enough of such professionals. So does Canada. Lately, Canada has introduced a new measure in this context. It will help bring in more health professionals to work in the COVID-19 scenario. This involves international medical graduates.

Canada is now allowing international medical graduates to work in Ontario. These graduates must have passed qualifying exams to practice medicine in Canada. They could also be those who have graduated from medical schools within the past 2 years. They now have the chance to apply for a temporary license. It’s this license that allows them to work in Ontario.

The College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario is even calling for candidates who are yet to secure a Canadian medical residency position. They are allowed to apply for Supervised Short-Duration Certificates. With these certificates, international medical graduates can practice in Ontario for 30 days. They will have the possibility of working for a longer time. This depends on whether there is an approval for the renewal of their temporary license.

International medical graduates in Canada may be eligible for this opportunity to work in Canada. For this, they should have:

  • Completed a medical degree from an accredited medical school
  • Confirmation of employment from one of the approved categories of facilities laid out in the Medicine Act. This includes public hospitals
  • Practiced medicine full-time within the previous 2 years (including medical school)
  • Identified a supervisor

If they want to apply, the CPSO needs a confirmation of employment coming directly from the hospital. This confirmation can be mailed to inquiries@cpso.on.ca.

The Supervised Short-Duration Certificates have been issued since last month. 10 out of the 12 doctors that submitted their applications before April 3, 2020, got certificates through this program.
