Under the German Skilled Workers Immigration Act, Germany issued over 60,000 visas to international skilled workers in 2021.  Key highlights
  • Germany is a manufacturing powerhouse that requires a large workforce.
  • Workers who have finished vocational training in Germany or a program approved by Germany from another nation are eligible for the visa.
  • The rules for persons in other professions haven't altered. In 2021, Germany issued close to 60,000 visas to international skilled workers under the German Skilled Workers Immigration Act.
With this act, German firms will be able to hire talented individuals from abroad who have completed the requisite vocational training, which implies they must have completed at least two years of training. Until now, if firms were required to hire such individuals, the occupation had to be listed on a shortage occupations list. This made it impossible for qualified workers to immigrate, and employers were unable to hire them. Restrictions on employing immigrant workers in shortage occupations will no longer be applicable if the act is passed. The requirement for qualified people in the IT sector is another area where this act will have an impact. Even if they do not have a university degree or vocational training, foreign employees are eligible to apply for a job to work in Germany. Professional experience in previous positions will be the only criterion currently. This experience must be for at least three years and must have been obtained within the last seven years. More skilled professionals will be able to obtain a residence visa and remain in the country even after their vocational training is recognized. The act has sped up the process of issuing residency permits to skilled employees, reducing the six-month wait time previously. The invitation of 60,000 visas to foreign workers in 2021 is testimony to the fact that the Skilled Migration Act is successful in meeting the demand for skilled workers in the country.
