Alberta held its latest Express Entry draw of 2020. This was Alberta’s 4th Express Entry draw in 2020. The invitees of this draw can apply for a provincial nomination for a permanent residence.

A total of 150 Express Entry candidates were invited by the Alberta Immigrant Nominee Program (AINP). The lowest Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score in this program was 300 points.

The immigration candidates in the AINP draw are not needed to have job offers in the Alberta province to be invited for nomination. However, it's necessary to have their profiles in the federal Express Entry system pool.

There are 3 main economic class immigration programs that come under Express Entry:

  • Federal Skilled Worker Program
  • Federal Skilled Trades Program
  • Canadian Experience Class

The factors that are used to check eligibility of candidates for Express Entry include:

  • Education
  • Work experience
  • Official language skills
  • Age

Based on these parameters, the candidates are assigned a CRS score. It’s the highest-scoring candidates that get Invitations to Apply (ITAs) for permanent residency. Express Entry candidates with Alberta’s provincial nomination get 600 CRS points added to their overall score.

The additional points thus earned guarantees the candidate’s receiving an ITA for Canadian permanent residency. So, a candidate with a score of 300 CRS points gets a provincial nomination, his/her CRS score gets increased to 900. That many points would be more than sufficient to qualify for an ITA in a forthcoming Express Entry draw.

Candidates were required to score 471 points to qualify for receiving an ITA in the latest federal Express Entry draw. To be eligible for the Alberta Express Entry stream, the candidates should be working in a job that supports Alberta’s priorities for economic development and diversification. Only then the candidate can get an invitation through the AINP stream.

The AINP does not provide a list of eligible occupations. Though job offers in Alberta are not compulsory, AINP gives priority to candidates with any of these:

  • A job offer, and/or work experience in Alberta
  • A degree from a Canadian post-secondary institution along with a valid job offer
  • A parent, child or sibling already living in the province

This year till now, Alberta has issued 651 invitations to Express Entry candidates. In 2019, the total number of invitations were 11,137 through the Alberta Express Entry Stream.
