In more positive events in the EU, the Prime Ministers of 3 Baltic nations made a decision with consensus on lifting the internal border restrictions. These restrictions were put in place due to the COVID-19 outbreak. The foreign ministers of these countries met over a video conference on April 29, 2020. In that meeting, they agreed on an exit strategy for the situation caused by the pandemic. They agreed on the importance of a well-coordinated solution to lift internal border restrictions. They were all willing to resume passenger traffic across borders. Latvia’s Foreign Minister Edgars Rinkēvičs pressed on the need for information about taking away of restrictions to be exchanged regularly between the 3 Baltic States. This key practice will help overcome the crisis with flawless coordination. The consular services of the Baltic States facilitating organized repatriation trips received praise at the meeting. The provision of opportunities for the transit of citizens to their country of residence was also commemorated. Estonia’s PM, Jüri Ratas expressed the desire to find the right time to start with mutually easing the restrictions. Similar to the Baltic nations’ decision, efforts in the same lines were made by the Schengen states earlier. The Interior Ministers of the European Union’s member nations were lively in sharing their opinions, experiences, and best practices to fight COVID-19 in an earlier meeting. The pros and cons of the harmonious efforts of the member states in such an unprecedented situation were also talked about. The Ministers then agreed that the borders could be opened in a phased and cautious manner. The process will begin with border areas showing a drop in COVID-19 cases.
