Highlights: Canada plans to issue 1.5 Million PRs by 2026! 

  • Canada plans to welcome 500,000 new permanent residents in 2205 and 2026. 
  • Around 85% of permanent residents were granted citizenship in Canada in 2023. 
  • The IRCC released stats suggesting more than 3000 citizenship ceremonies were held to welcome over 354,000 people.
  • Candidates must be permanent residents of Canada to become eligible for citizenship.

Eligibility for Canadian Citizenship 

You are eligible to apply for citizenship in Canada if you fulfil the given eligibility requirements:

  • You are a Canadian PR holder
  • You have physically lived in Canada for at least three years
  • You have filed taxes for at least three years in Canada
  • You qualified for the Canadian citizenship test (only if you are between 18-54 years of age)
  • You are proficient in English or French with a CLB level of 4 or higher (only if you are between 18-54 years of age)

Why you may be ineligible for Canadian Citizenship?

You may be ineligible to apply for citizenship in Canada if:

  • You are serving an imprisonment term or are on probation or parole. 
  • You are outside Canada and serving a sentence.
  • You are involved in a criminal charge or trial under the Citizenship Act.
  • You are asked to leave the country under a removal order. 
  • Your citizenship application was rejected in the past five years for misrepresentation of data. 
  • You have been accused of fraudulent activities in the past ten years, which caused your citizenship to be revoked. 
  • You have been found guilty of any offence under the Canadian Citizenship Act in the past four years.
  • You have been found guilty of a crime outside of Canada equivalent to an offence under the Canadian Citizenship Act in four years before applying for citizenship. 
  • As a PR holder, you have been charged with terrorism or high treason or convicted as a member of an organised armed group that has had an armed conflict with Canada.
