New Ontario Minimum Wage

Ontario Government will increase the minimum salary wage for workers to $17.20 per hour from October 01, 2024. The increase in annualized salary will shoot up to 3.9% in Ontario. Following the increase in annual wages, Ontario will rank as the second major province offering a high minimum wage in Canada.

 

Among all major Canadian provinces, British Columbia reports to offer the highest minimum wage of $17.40 per hour beginning from June 01, 2024. Workers can expect an annual salary increase of up to $1355 if they work at least 40 hours per week and get the basic minimum wage.

 

The table below shows the increase in the minimum salary for workers since 2020:

Special Ontario Minimum Wage

Under-18 students in Ontario working for at least 28 hours per week throughout their school year or during summer breaks will also get an increased minimum salary. The hourly minimum wage for students will increase to $16.20 from the current $15.60. Since 2020, the minimum wage for under-18 students reported a growth rate of $2.80 per hour.

Homeworkers in Ontario doing paid work from home will also benefit from the increase in minimum wages. The minimum salary for homeworkers will increase to $18.90 per hour from the current $18.20. Hunters, fishermen, and wilderness guides will also get an increased minimum wage of $86 per day for working less than five consecutive hours. The minimum salary will increase from $165.75 to $172.05 per day if they are working for more than five consecutive hours.

 

The highest hourly wages for homeworkers have rose by $3.20 per hour. The table below shows the increase in the minimum salary for homeworkers since 2020:

 Recent reports by the Ontario Living Wage Network reveal that the median living wage in Ontario is around $21 per hour. Ontario has 635 companies along with 868 certified living wage workplaces that pay living wages voluntarily instead of minimum wages.
