The government of Norway will now allow seasonal workers in the agricultural sector to come inside the country. This was after considerable reduction was seen in the number of COVID-19 infections.

After this change in migration policy, seasonal workers even from outside the European Economic Area (EEA) can arrive and work in Norway. This was stated by Ms. Olaug Bollestad (KrF), Norway’s Agriculture and Food Minister.

Norway is going ahead with this change in policy because it’s in need of more manpower. But since most of Norway’s visa application centers are closed now due to COVID-19, a considerable scale of challenge exists.

The Norwegian government is constantly trying to find the right balance between COVID prevention and the rest of the essential social considerations. Hence, though the seasonal workers are allowed, they must, upon arrival in Norway, follow quarantine rules.

Norway had decided earlier that the country will extend border controls with other Schengen Countries to prevent the spread of COViD-19. The border controls will be in effect till May 16, 2020. This extension from the earlier date of May 5, 2020, is allowed by Article 28 of the Schengen Border Code.
