My journey as a marketing manager from Dubai to Canada

Marketing is a crucial part of any business and plays an essential role in developing a business. The fact that marketing can make or break a company drew me towards making a career in marketing. My name is Shalini, and I have done my MBA in marketing; and this is the story of my journey from Dubai to Canada.

As soon as I finished my MBA from Mumbai University, I got into a marketing job. Social media marketing piqued my interest, and I started focusing on it.

The fundamental goal was to use the available social media outlets to divert as much traffic as possible to the company’s website. We concentrated on paid and free search, both organic and inorganic.

My favorite aspect of the work was creating media campaigns and working with my team under a tight deadline to smooth out the kinks in the approach that has the best possibility of succeeding. The best part was when our hard work paid off in the shape of targeted users visiting our website.

I gained experience in social media marketing and wanted to go abroad in search of better prospects. I landed a job in Dubai as a social media manager in a leading food products manufacturer there.

The decision to move to Canada

After five years of working in Dubai, I wanted to move to Canada and settle there as a permanent resident. I realized that I had the required work experience, and I was confident I would get a good score in the IELTS. My score in these aspects and other factors would give me the required score to be eligible to apply for permanent residency in Canada.

Check your eligibility for Canada immigration

To get a better idea, I joined online forums and started talking to and reaching out to people who had successfully obtained a permanent residency in Canada.

Considering my options

I made contact with persons who had recently migrated to Canada. I spoke with them about the best ways to apply and the best programs to improve the chances of getting permanent residence in Canada.

I also inquired whether I could apply on my own or if seeking professional help to handle the paperwork for Canada PR was necessary. I received a variety of responses. Some had completed the task entirely on their own, with no assistance. Many of these got their applications rejected the first time around and had to reapply. Some others said seeking professional help would be a better option.

I was keen to choose the best and genuine immigration consultant, and I had heard so many stories about fake immigration consultants that I wanted to choose the best. I approached Y-Axis to help me with my Canada PR.

Finding a job in Canada

Before applying for PR, I was determined to get a job in Canada. I used the Y-Axis job search services for getting a job, and I also enlisted their assistance in updating my résumé to meet current international requirements.

I applied to maybe eight different positions. Y-Axis has a good selection of jobs in Canada that are distributed around the country.

Express Entry

The next step was to apply for PR through Express Entry after finding a job, and I got a position as a social media marketing manager in Milton, Canada. I applied using the Express Entry system's Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP).

Candidates wishing to apply under the FSWP for immigration to Canada must first submit an Expression of Interest (EOI) by creating their online Express Entry profile.

The selection factors for the FSWP include the following criteria:

  • Age
  • Education
  • Work experience
  • Language ability- this includes English and/or French language skills
  • Adaptability
  • Having a valid job offer

To be eligible for the FSWP, candidates must score at least 67 points in all the above criteria.

Apart from this, candidates must fulfill the following conditions to qualify for the FSWP:

  • Have at least one year of continuous full-time or equivalent paid work experience in the past ten years in a skilled occupation.
  • Qualify for Arranged Employment with a Labor Market Impact Assessment and a full-time, permanent job offer from a Canadian employer
  • Have completed a Ph.D. in Canada, or have completed two years of study in Canada towards a Ph.D. in a recognized institution
  • A foreign educational credential and an Educational Credential Assessment (ECA) by an agency approved by CIC to show it is equal to a completed Canadian secondary or post-secondary academic certificate.
  • Pass a minimum threshold of language ability for one of Canada’s two official languages (English/French)

Around April 2020, I started working on my Express Entry profile. However, at the time, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Canada did not invite FSWP candidates. Instead, they were concentrating on PNP and CEC applications.

The immigration process in Canada is simple. All you have to do now is go over the IRCC website, and they explain everything in-depth, and you are updated regularly. I would send an email to IRCC if I had any doubts.

Getting my ITA

The Canadian government finally started holding all-program draws from July.

I received an invitation to apply from Canada in an Express Entry draw held in August 2020.

I completed my application for permanent residence in Canada as soon as possible.

A few months ago, I acquired my Confirmation of Permanent Residence (COPR).

I would recommend Canada or Australia to anyone considering immigrating to another country as a competent worker. Both are decent enough countries to settle in, with good health care, free education, excellent quality of life, and no language barriers.

Express Entry is one of the fastest ways to get Canadian immigration. According to IRCC, most Canada PR applications submitted through Express Entry are processed within six months upon receipt of all required papers.

At the moment, Canada is a great place to be. People here claim that if I have a Canadian permanent resident visa, I could work in the United States. If the opportunity arises, I may seriously consider working in the United States as a Canada PR.

I would recommend Canada to anyone considering immigrating to another country as a competent worker. The country offers good health care, free education, excellent quality of life, and has no language barrier.
