Alert issued for Fraud: Watch out for Immigration scam red flags!

Canada IRCC issued a statement via tweeting about the immigration frauds and scams. Online frauds are said to be targeting international students and Canadian newcomers via phone scams. Scammers contact individuals claiming their personal data, fee payments, and fines.

Some of the most common visa frauds are as follows:

People pretending to be Government officials:

Such scams often involve people posing as government officials over the call. The person over the call intimidates the candidate by talking about the incorrect filing of papers, not paying the required fee, and hinting at a possible deportation or off-boarding situation. In some cases, the scammers even terrorize the family and friends of the candidate.

Fraud Emails:

Candidates receive an email persuading them to invest money or give personal data, including bank passwords and banking accounts.

What to do if you receive one?

Step 1: Delete the email.

Step 2: Beware of emails redirecting you to pages or websites asking for personal data.

Step 3: DO NOT click on any links attached to the email.

Sham prizes:

Candidates may receive text messages claiming to have won a lottery or prize money.

What to do if you receive one?

Step 1: Delete the text message immediately.

Step 2: Do not respond to messages that say "STOP" or "NO," and delete it immediately.

Step 3: Forward any such messages to 7726, which deciphers them to SPAM. This lets your provider block any future texts or messages from the sender.

Fake computer bugs/virus:

Sometimes, candidates receive an email or phone call saying the system is infected with a virus. The caller will then try to extort information, including computer passwords and other private information, in claims of removing the virus.

What to do if this happens?

Step 1: Refrain from giving computer access to anybody you did not contact for repair or help.

Step 2: If your computer has detected a virus, install anti-virus software or seek professional assistance at a reliable store.
