Austria requires skilled immigrants to solve the skills shortage in various sectors. The country’s open-door policy towards migrants is an extension of its acknowledgment of their contribution towards their economy.

If you want to work in Austria, here are your alternatives for obtaining a work visa.

Citizens of non-EU countries must have the appropriate work permit in order to work and live in Austria. If they plan to stay in the country for more than six months, they will need a work permit.

The following are the several types of work visas:

The Red-White-Red Card is a two-year visa that is linked to a single employer. You'll need to apply for a new Red-White-Red card if you change jobs during those two years.

It's a combination of a work permit and a residential permit.

It has a two-year validity period and is tied to a certain employer.

You'll need to apply for a new Red-White-Red card if you change jobs during those two years.

Eligibility conditions

Applicants are granted the Red-White-Red card after being evaluated on a points-based basis.

The applicants must have a sufficient number of points based on factors such as age, education, work experience, language skills, and so on.

Applicants are evaluated by the Austrian Public Employment Service (AMS), which determines the number of points awarded.

Individuals who have held a Red-White-Red card for more than two years are eligible to apply for the Red-White-Red card plus if they meet the qualifying requirements and has 21 months of work experience with the same employer.

The Red-White-Red plus visa comes with the following benefits:

  • Holders are entitled to permanent residence and unlimited employment in the country.
  • They can change jobs without having to reapply for a permission.
  • Members of the same family can apply for the same card.
  • Those who intend to temporarily relocate to Austria in order to find work can apply for a six-month residency visa.

Individuals who fall into the following categories are eligible for this card:

Persons with exceptional qualifications

Workers with specialized skills in fields where there is a scarcity

This card is available to those who fit into the following categories:

Exceptionally qualified individuals

Specialized workers in fields where there is a scarcity of resources

Key workers

Graduates from Austrian universities

The Red-White-Red card plus is available to employers who have worked for the same company for at least 21 months in the previous 24 months.

The Red-White-Red plus visa comes with the following benefits:

  • Holders are entitled to permanent residence and unlimited employment in the country.
  • They can change jobs without having to reapply for a permission.
  • Members of the same family are able to apply for the same card.

Six-month residence visa: Those who wish to temporarily relocate to Austria in order to find work can apply for this visa, which is valid for six months as the name suggests.

Students' residence permit: Students who have completed their studies or related training in Australia can extend their stay for another 12 months in order to find work or start a business.

The requirements for obtaining a work visa are as follows:

The Red-White-Red card is the most common visa requested by foreign workers. It is awarded to applicants after a point-based system has been used to evaluate them. The applicants must have a sufficient number of points based on factors such as age, education, work experience, language skills, and so on.

Applicants are evaluated by the Austrian Public Employment Service (AMS), which determines the number of points awarded. This will determine whether or not the application is eligible for a visa. Highly skilled individuals, for example, will need 70 points, whereas skilled people in shortage occupations will need 55 points.

The prerequisites for applying for a visa vary depending on the type of visa sought. However, there is a standard set of documents that must be submitted, which includes:

  • A valid passport
  • Birth certificate or any other official document
  • Recent photo
  • Accommodation proof
  • Proof of medical coverage
  • Evidence of sufficient funds

Applicants must provide the following proof to meet the eligibility requirements:

  • A bachelor's or master's degree from a university or other institution of higher learning
  • A senior management position's gross yearly salary
  • Activities involving research and development
  • Prizes and awards
  • Testimonials and certifications of employment
  • Proof of linguistic proficiency
  • Proof of having studied in Austria

EU/EEA resident

A work visa is not required for citizens of the European Union (EU) or the European Economic Area (EEA). To work in the country, they do not require a work permit.

EU Blue card

For a duration of two years, the EU blue card allows highly qualified non-EU people to live and work in Austria. If you have a valid job offer, you will be given a work visa. Another need is that the AMS (Austrian Labor Market Service) declares that the task cannot be performed by any Austrian or EU citizen.

Eligibility requirements for EU/EEA residents

Applicants must be working for an Austrian company or be self-employed.

They must demonstrate that they have sufficient money and insurance to support themselves and their families.

Within three months of their arrival, they must register at the local immigration office.

EU Blue Card Eligibility Requirements

Must have completed at least a three-year university study.

Qualifications must be appropriate for the position.

The salary indicated in the employment offer must be 1.5 times the average yearly income of Austrian full-time employees.

 Application process

Applicants must submit the requisite documents and pay the required fees at the Austrian embassy in their home country, which vary depending on the type of visa. The Red-White-Red card application fee, which includes the payment for the form, is roughly 150 Euros.

Keep in mind that an Austrian work visa does not provide you permission to stay in the country. You will need to apply for a separate residence permit for this. You will be required to provide your work permit, income statement, and a letter from your company in order to do so. After five years of residence in Austria, you can apply for permanent residency.
