Why is Canada a good choice to study abroad?

canada

canada

In the last decade, the international student population in Canada has increased three times. In 2018, Canada had 570,000 international students.

As per the ICEF, Canada is the fourth-largest host country for international students after the US, UK and Australia.

UNESCO says that in 2017 there were 5.3 million international students in comparison to just 2 million in 2000. With household incomes increasing, the middle-class population in source countries is more interested in studying abroad now than previously.

Why is Canada a good choice to study abroad?

Low cost of education in comparison to other countries like the US and Australia is the major advantage of Canada. International students still need to pay more than domestic students, yet, it is cheaper than other popular countries.

Canada is also well-known for its quality of education. The country houses some of the most reputed Universities in the world.

Canada has immigration friendly policies and is very welcoming towards new immigrants. While other Western countries are adopting an anti-immigration stance, Canada is welcoming newcomers with open arms. No wonder more international students are choosing Canada over other countries.

International students in Canada can work part-time during their studies. Not only does this help finance their education, but they also gain valuable Canadian work experience.

Canada also offers the Post-Graduation Work Permit which allows students to live and work in the country after they graduate. International students are allowed to live in Canada for up to three years on the PGWP.

Another advantage of studying in Canada is that international students get an edge while applying for PR through the Express Entry Program. International students get additional points for education in Canada. Also, there are many provincial nomination streams through which international students can apply for PR.

Statistics Canada’s research shows that due to its ageing population and low birth rate, Canada is in need of more immigrants. International students have higher chances of being more successful in the Canadian labour market. That is because they are generally young, well-educated, are fluent in English or French and have Canadian work experience.

Canada also acknowledges the fact that international students can bring immense benefit to smaller communities. International students living in smaller communities tend to make closer connections than the ones that don’t. That gives a sense of belonging and such students are more likely to stay back in Canada.

Manitoba issues 180 invitations in the latest draw

Manitoba

Manitoba

Manitoba held the latest draw on 7th November. The province issued 180 invitations to Express Entry candidates, skilled workers and international graduates.

Invitations were issued by the MPNP under the following categories:

  • Skilled Workers in Manitoba
  • Skilled Workers Overseas
  • International Education Stream

The MPNP issues invitations under the Skilled Workers in Manitoba and Skilled Workers Overseas categories based on your EOI score. You need to file an EOI with the MPNP to apply under any of these categories. Your EOI will be scored on the Manitoba points grid. Your EOI will receive a score out of a total of 1,000 points. High-scoring candidates are then invited through regular draws conducted by the MPNP.

The results of the 7th November draw are as follows:

  • Skilled Workers in Manitoba: 133
  • Skilled Workers Overseas: 24
  • International Education Stream: 23

The 7th November draw invited 23 Express Entry candidates with a valid profile and job-seeker code. To be considered by the MPNP for a provincial nomination, EE candidates need to file a separate EOI with the MPNP.

Skilled Workers in Manitoba

If you have a permanent, full-time job offer from Manitoba, you can apply under this stream.

The cut-off score in the 7th November draw was 560.

Skilled Workers Overseas

If you live outside Canada but have skills which are high in demand in Manitoba, you may apply under this category. However, you must be able to prove a connection to Manitoba. Your “connection” could be a close relative, previous education or work experience in Manitoba.

It is not necessary for you to be in Manitoba at the time of applying.

The cut-off score in the 7th November draw was 719.

International Education Stream

If you have completed your graduation from an educational institution in Manitoba, you may apply under this stream. You should also be able to demonstrate skills which are in demand in the province.

Manitoba has issued 6,911 invitations so far in 2019.

Can you travel to Mexico on your Canadian Student Visa?

mexico

mexico

Mexico, even though it is geographically located in North America, belongs ethnologically to Latin America. Even though we know the country as Mexico, the official name is the United Mexican States.

Apart from the Federal District, Mexico has 31 socially and physically diverse states.

The US and Canada welcome many international students every year. Many of these international students who come to Canada often wonder if they can travel to Mexico? Can they travel to Mexico on their Canadian Student Visa?

Let’s find out.

According to the Mexican Embassy in India, the following people do not need a visa to travel to Mexico. They can travel to Mexico for transit, tourism or business for a maximum of 180 days if they have present any one document at the port of entry:

  • Any valid visa of Canada, the US, the UK, Japan or Schengen Visa
  • PR (Permanent Residency) Card of the UK, the US, Canada, Schengen, Japan or the Pacific Alliance (Chile, Columbia, Peru)

However, it is important to note that only multiple-entry visas are acceptable.

You may, however, still be denied entry into Mexico despite holding one of the above documents. Granting or denying entry is at the sole discretion of the Mexican immigration authorities at the port of entry in Mexico. They have the final say in this regard.

Immigration fuels population growth in Canada

Canada

canada

Between April and July this year, immigration was a key factor that fueled population growth in Canada. The April to July quarter recorded the highest-ever population growth in Canada.

Canada’s population increased by 181,057 between April and July this year. As of 1st July 2019, Canada’s population was estimated to be 37,589,262.

Statistics Canada revealed that the April-July quarter had the second-highest population growth in absolute numbers in the last 48 years. The key factor in driving population growth was immigration which was responsible for 85% of the growth in the April-July quarter.

The second quarter of 2019 welcomed 94,281 immigrants to Canada.

All provinces in Canada, including Yukon Territory, recorded positive net migration in the April-July quarter.

Among all Canadian provinces, Prince Edward Island recorded the highest growth in population. According to Statistics Canada, PEI had the most rapid population growth in Canada. The April-July quarter saw a 0.8% increase in the population growth of the province. 78.4% of the population growth of PEI was due to immigration.

The second highest population growth in Canada happened in Yukon Territory. The April-July quarter saw a population growth of 0.6%. Immigration attributed to 62% of the total population growth in the territory.

Net international migration was even more responsible for the population growth in Quebec and Ontario. 87.1% of the population growth in Quebec was due to immigration, while 85.5% of the population growth in Ontario was attributed to immigration.

Population growth in British Columbia and Alberta was also largely due to immigration. Immigration contributed to 78.2% of the population growth in BC and 61.1% of the population growth in Alberta.

According to Statistics Canada, overseas immigration also helped offset the negative effects of interprovincial migration in Manitoba and Saskatchewan. 2719 migrants from Saskatchewan and 2802 from Manitoba moved to other provinces in Canada. Yet, these provinces recorded positive population growth, thanks to international immigration.

Immigration also helped New Brunswick and Nova Scotia recover from negative natural increase. The negative natural increase means to have more deaths than births in a province. Yet, Nova Scotia closed the April-July quarter at 0.5% of population growth and New Brunswick at 0.4% of population growth.

There was an increase in international immigration to Newfoundland and Labrador as well. Despite that, the province recorded negative population growth as there were more deaths than births. Also, many migrants moved to other provinces which also cause negative population growth.

Will the 2019 Canadian elections affect immigration policies?

Saskatchewan conducted the largest draw ever on 17th Oct

Saskatchewan

Saskatchewan

Saskatchewan held the largest ever provincial draw on 17th October. The SINP invited 986 candidates from the Express Entry Pool for a provincial nomination.

To apply under the Express Entry sub-category, you need to lodge an EOI with the SINP. Eligible candidates need to have work experience in an occupation that is high in demand in the province.

In June 2018, Saskatchewan launched its own EOI system. The SINP EOI system manages both the Express Entry and the Occupations In-demand sub-categories.

The SINP Express Entry sub-stream is linked to the Federal Express Entry Program. A provincial nomination from Saskatchewan adds 600 points to a candidate’s CRS score.

A job offer is not compulsory to apply under the SINP Express Entry sub-stream. You must, however, have work experience in an occupation that is in high demand in the province.

The 17th October draw issued invitations under the following NOC codes:

  •  NOC 0621- Retail and wholesale trade managers
  • NOC  2171– Information system analyst and consultants
  • NOC 7321- Automotove service technicians, truck & bus mechanics & mechanical repairs
  • NOC 1311- Accounting technicians & bookkeepers
  • NOC 0631- Restaurant & food service managers
  • NOC 4212- Social & community service workers
  • NOC 7312- Heavy-duty equipment mechanics
  • NOC 1114- Other financial officers
  • NOC 0711- Construction managers
  • NOC 4214- Early childhood educators & assistants
  • NOC 6221- Technical sales specialists- wholesale trade
  • NOC 0821- Manager in agriculture

The minimum required score in the 17th October draw was 67 points.

The SINP states that the major factors that get you an invitation are your occupation and score.

The SINP has recently increased the number of eligible occupations under the Express Entry and Occupations In-demand sub-streams from 19 to over 200.
