What are the changes in the Family Sponsorship Program of Canada?

In 2019, Canada will drop the lottery system that allowed immigrants to sponsor their parents and grandparents. It will revert back to the first-come-first-served system it followed prior to 2017.

Under the Family Sponsorship Program of Canada, 20,500 visa places have been set aside for the year 2019. For 2020, the quota is 21,000. This is a considerable hike from 2017 when the quota was 17,000.

Canada will start accepting applications for its Family Program by the end of January. The announcement was made by an IRCC spokesperson on 31st December 2018.

Ahmed Hussen, Immigration Minister, said that the lottery system received negative feedback from a lot of Canadians. This was the primary reason why it was scrapped, as quoted by CBC News.

Uzma Jalal, who is now a Canadian citizen, has been trying to get her parents to Canada from Bangladesh for 7 years. She had filed her first sponsorship application in 2011. She received consecutive rejections in 2011, 2014, 2015, 2016, and 2017. As per Uzma, the rejections had nothing to do with her parents’ eligibility. She says that the rejections happened due to a backlog of applications.

The Family Sponsorship Program of Canada had been swamped under massive backlogs for years. In 2011, there were 167,000 pending applications. As per IRCC statistics, this number has come down to 26,000 in June 2018.

The processing time for the Family Sponsorship Program has also been shortened. Previously application took up to 8 years to be processed. The processing time has now come down to 2 years.

The increase in the quota signals good news for many immigrant families in Canada. These changes in the Family Sponsorship Program of Canada will now help many Canadians to reunite with their parents and grandparents.

Top 5 changes that you will see in Australian immigration in 2019

australia

australia

The Australian immigration system has been dynamic. Here are the top 5 changes that you will see in Australian immigration in 2019:

  1. South Australia visa for startup entrepreneurs

South Australia will launch a new visa for startup entrepreneurs. This visa will be different than the existing Business and Innovation Visa. The startup entrepreneur visa does not need funding arrangement like other entrepreneur visas. Eligible applicants will need to submit a strong business proposal to the state for this visa. The English requirement for this visa is low; just a score of 5 on each band will suffice.

  1. The launch of a new Parent Visa

Australia will launch a new temporary sponsored Parent Visa for parents of overseas immigrants. The quota for this visa will be around 15,000 per year. The validity of the Parent Visa may range from 3 to 5 years. These Visas would be renewable for up to 10 years. A 3 year Parent Visa would cost $5,000 and a 5-year visa would cost $10,000, as per SBS News.

  1. Processing times for Partner Visas would be longer

The Family Violence Bill was passed by the Australian Senate in November 2018. As per the new Bill, the sponsorship application would need to be first approved before lodging the Partner Visa. This would mean stringent scrutiny for sponsors and Partner Visa applicants. The additional scrutiny will result in longer processing times for Partner Visas.

  1. Increase in fund requirement for international students

International students coming to Australia will now need to show funds up to $20,290. If you include your spouse or partner in the application, you will need an additional $7,100. In the case of children, you will need to show $3,040 for each child included in the application.

  1. Australia will ensure employer-sponsored migrants are paid what they are due

In 2019, the Dept. of Home Affairs will take strong action against companies underpaying employer-sponsored overseas workers. In doing so, it will partner with the Australian Taxation Office. The Dept. will gather tax files of Subclass 457 and Subclass 482 holders. They will match them with their current tax records to ensure the migrants are paid the right amount.

Nova Scotia, Canada approved record no. of applications in 2018

Nova Scotia in Canada approved a record number of applications in 2018 from immigration candidates. The province is on its way to welcome more Permanent Residents than it ever did in the past.

Nova Scotia has accepted 2,272 applications in 2018 in comparison to 1,651 in 2017. The Nova Scotia Nominee Program accepted 1,400 applications in 2018. The remaining 872 applications were accepted through the Atlantic Immigration Pilot Program.

Out of the 1,400 applications, 1,095 applications were approved under the Nova Scotia Demand, Nova Scotia Experience and Labour Market Priorities stream.

The AIPP is operated jointly by the Federal Govt. and the provincial governments of Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador, and Prince Edward Island. 716 businesses in Nova Scotia are listed under this program.

As per a report from the Nova Scotia Office of Immigration, the province is expecting a high number of PR landings this year. 5,225 newcomers settled in Nova Scotia between 1st January and 31st October 2018. The Govt. anticipates that the numbers in 2018 will cross the numbers of 2016. 5,845 newcomers landed in Nova Scotia in 2016.

CIC News quoted Lena Metlege Diab, Immigration Minister of Nova Scotia as saying that the figures reflect the work put in by the province. Diab believes that the rise in numbers will help grow the population and strengthen the economy.

There has been an upward trend in Nova Scotia’s immigration numbers in the last 3 years.  The province now houses a record 964,693 residents as of 1st October 2018.

Two new immigration streams were introduced by the Nova Scotia Nominee Program in 2018. The first one was the Labour Market Priorities stream linked with the Express Entry. The second stream was aimed at specifically attracting doctors to the province.

The Labour Market Priorities Stream allows the NSNP to nominate candidates from the EE pool. These candidates have work experience in occupations which are struggling with a labour shortage in the province. The first draw of this stream was held in August 2018. The stream targeted Early Childhood Educators and Assistants.

The Physician’s stream aims at attraction foreign primary care doctors and specialists to the province. It was created in February 2018 and has issued 18 nominations so far.
