An internship program to explore career in Australia

In the spring of 2017, Kendall Burkins, 19, began thinking about his academic and professional goals. Kendall was a mechanical engineering major but wanted to pursue a more creative career path. This led him to switch his major to product design and apply for a summer internship at Sydney’s Art Gallery of New South Wales. The internship was offered by the Office of the Vice President for the Arts and the Stanford Global Studies Internship Program. Kendall hoped that the internship would give him the much-needed mentorship and experience to pursue a career in design.

At the end of the spring quarter, Kendall headed to Australia. The Art Gallery is centrally located and is near the famous Sydney Opera House overlooking the Sydney Harbor. He would walk to work every day as he lived a few blocks away from the museum.

For the next 10 weeks, Kendall worked closely with museum staff, curators, and designers planning exhibitions and art shows. He observed them collaborating and implementing design concepts and finding the best ways to assemble artwork in a given space. The first points in the process were the curators whose job were to research artwork and make a plan to present it.

Next in line was the design team who work together to bring to life the curators plan. Kendall helped with building foam core models of the exhibition spaces of the gallery. The curators would use these models to plan art shows. He also helped in the exhibition called “Space Makers and Room Shakers” by installing two works of art.

As per the Stanford News, one of the art pieces Kendall worked on was the “Atomic: Full of love, full of wonder”, created by the artist Nike Savvas. The artwork display comprised of several colored vibrating balls suspended in the air.

Kendall and another intern also conducted a project on user experience to understand visitors’ reaction to the physical spaces inside the museum. They created and conducted surveys and documented trends in the activities of the guests through observation and production of heat maps. They had to create renderings and make a final presentation including the results and recommendations. Kendall received a positive feedback from the museum staff and by the end of his internship, they were even thinking of implementing some of his recommendations.

Every summer many students of Stanford extend their classroom experience to cultural, immersive, and professional experience abroad through the Stanford Global Studies Internship Program. This program is open to all major students and the base stipend offered is $6000. There are numerous opportunities spanning diverse fields like media, business, technology, public service, law, policy, engineering, medicine, and human rights. The students can enroll in an internship program in 23 locations across the world.

The art internships are some of the most popular and newest opportunities in the program. Stanford will announce a list of all opportunities for summer 2019 in December and will start accepting applications in January.

Temporary Residence Visa options in UAE

uae

uae

UAE is currently bloated with endless opportunities. For people hungry enough to grab them, it offers temporary residence called as ‘Residency Visa’. It lasts for a maximum period of two to three years, giving one opportunity to renew it thereafter.

Both the work and the residence permit come together with an identity card which is used by the country instead of a passport.

Now let’s have a look at the criteria one has to meet to be eligible for the visa –

  1. Ownership of Property in Dubai

An investor must own properties worth Dh1 million or more. Mortgages are acceptable, but in that case, a minimum 50 percent of its original price must be paid off. Acceptable Properties include Apartment and Villa or Townhouse. Non Acceptable properties include Office space, Hotel room or Apartment or any other commercial property. The Visa, in this case, is valid for 2 years. However, it does not authorize the holder to work in the country.

  1. Owning a Company

If one owns a company, either in the Free Trade Zone or Mainland, they can apply for residency as a company’s shareholder. It also provides the right to sponsor employees. The residency visa, in this case, is issued for a maximum period of 3 years. However, the expense of company registration and annual maintenance could be punitive.

  1. Holding Employment Contact

Any foreign expatriate, holding an Employment Contract in Dubai, can obtain the Residency Visa. In this case, the hiring company takes responsibility for the visa process. However, to sponsor one’s spouse and children, their salary should be ranging between Dh3,000 to Dh4,000. In the case of parents, it is Dh20,000.

Keeping the Visa Active:

For option second and third, if the holder is outside UAE for more than 179 days the visa gets expired. In the same way, the investor visa (first option) is valid till 360 days. Expiry means you have to apply for the cancellation process and reapply for the residency visa.

The Visa aims at given women an opportunity to adjust to their economic and social status after the loss of the spouse. Earlier, women were required to leave the country in the case of divorce or death of the spouse.

Student Visa

Students who are sponsored by their parents will get a 2 year Visa after 12th Grade. Initially, a one-year Visa would be granted after 12th grade or to those who have completed their college or University studies. This Visa would be renewable for another one year. To avail the Visa, parents would need to pay Dh5000, as per The Khaleej Times.

Do you know how Canada’s Express Entry Program has evolved?

Canada

Canada

Since its introduction in January 2015, the Canadian Express Entry Program has conducted over 100 pool draws. The Express Entry Program is the country’s main economic immigration program. It manages the pool of candidates in three categories- Federal Skilled Worker Program, Federal Skilled Trades Class, and the Canadian Experience Class.

The Express Entry Program is the primary source of PR applications for the IRCC’s Multi-Year Immigration Level Plans, which it introduced in November 2017. There has been a substantial increase in the number of admission to Canada through the Express Entry program from 9,800 in 2015 to 65,420 in 2017.

Canada has set an admission target of 74,900 in 2018 which will increase to 81,400 in 2019, as per CIC.  2020 targets are even higher at 85,800.

Since its introduction in 2015, here is how IRCC has increased intake targets:

Year Intake Target
2015 51,000
2016 58,400
2017 71,700
2018 74,900
2019 81,400
2020 85,800

One of the main indicator’s of Express Entry’s evolution are the occupations that have received invitations over 100 draws. In the first couple of years, Cooks and Food Service Supervisor featured among the top 5 occupations to receive an ITA. In 2017, however, both these occupations saw a massive dip with Food Service Supervisor at 14th and Cooks at 28th place.

Here are the top 5 occupations to receive ITAs:

Rank 2015 2016 2017
1 NOC 6311-Food Service Supervisors NOC 2171-Information System Analysts and Consultants NOC 2171-Information System Analysts and Consultants
2 NOC 6322-Cooks NOC 2173-Software Engineers NOC 2173-Software Engineers
3 NOC 2171-Information System Analysts and Consultants NOC 2174- Computer Programmers and Interactive Media Developers NOC 2174- Computer Programmers and Interactive Media Developers
4 NOC 2173-Software Engineers NOC 6322-Cooks NOC 1111- Financial auditors and accountants
5

NOC 2174- Computer Programmers and Interactive Media Developers

NOC 6311-Food Service Supervisors NOC 1241- Administrative Assistants

The shift in the occupation receiving ITAs corresponded with Canada’s decision to reduce the number of CRS points awarded for a job offer. In November 2016, IRCC reduced the CRS points for a job offer in Canada from 600 points to 200 points.

Though a job offer is not a mandatory requirement for eligibility under the Express Entry Program, however, the extra points do help in obtaining an ITA.

Prior to the modifications in November 2016, 45% of all invited candidates had a core CRS score of less than 400. The number dropped to 11% after IRCC’s CRS improvements were announced.

Program draws in 2018 have picked candidates with CRS scores in the range of 440 and 456. 14 draws in 2018 had their minimum scores between 440 and 444.

However, IRCC has announced that it would like to delve deeper into the EE pool to get to the vast talent who are scoring below the current cut-off. In the past, IRCC has reduced the CRS to as low as 413. Canada’s large intake targets for the coming years could make this a possibility.

For Express Entry candidates who are scoring below 440, the EE linked Provincial Nomination Programs could be another possibility to obtain an ITA. Candidates who are successful in obtaining a provincial nomination get an additional 600 points on their CRS.

2017 saw 13,528 EE candidates with a Provincial Nomination receiving an ITA, which was a 75% hike over 2016. Canada’s immigrant intake through PNPs is set to increase over the next few years.

UAE to become more attractive for international students

According to a Dubai Study, India could soon overtake China as the fastest-growing target market for international students.

As per foreign Universities, India is growing even more rapidly than China in sending students abroad for higher education. The study conducted by BMI Media and the Dubai International Academic City (DIAC) spoke to over 104 Universities in UAE, UK, UK, Canada, and Australia.

The Khaleej Times quoted Mohammad Abdullah of DIAC as saying that India and China were the leading markets of international students coming to Dubai. This could be due to the flexibility and the simple visa process. There are a lot of Indian expats living in Dubai. Their children are joining various Universities along with the students coming from abroad.

The study had asked the Universities overseas to rank the countries in the order of international students. China ranked 1st with 17% with India close on its heels with 16.8%. Nigeria was at 5% while Saudi Arabia and Pakistan were at 4.9% and 4.8% respectively.

Abdullah said that with the current visa reforms, UAE is all set to become even more attractive to international students.

UAE had recently made an announcement that students who do exceptionally well in Universities of UAE would be granted a 10-year residency visa. Other students would be eligible to apply for a 5-year residency visa in the UAE. Students on a dependent visa will be granted an extension so that they may find employment opportunities in the country after completing their studies. Universities in the Gulf country can definitely benefit from the current visa changes.

14% of the Universities that were surveyed by the Dubai study reported a decrease in the number of international students. 60% of these were Universities from the USA which reported that due to the immigration policies of the current Govt., lesser students are now opting for the USA.

Canada, on the other hand, has seen a surge in the number of international students. There has been a growth of over 11% in the Universities of the Maple Country. Canada’s friendly immigration policies and its quality of education are highly responsible for making it a major market for international education.

The Federal Express Entry Program issued a record high number of invitations in the third quarter. The Express Entry Program has issued 22,800 ITAs over the months of July, August, and September.

July 2018 saw 7,500 invitations being issued which was far higher than the 3,202 invitations issued in July 2017. August fell short with 7, 500 invitations as compared to 9,290 invitations issued in August 2017. September 2018 was a record-setting month with 7,800 invitations being issued.

The minimum CRS in all the draws held over the third quarter ranged between 440 and 445. 440 was the lowest that the CRS had dipped in 2018, as per CIC.

All eyes are now set on the Express Entry’s performance to see if it can surpass 2017’s ITA record.

If IRCC maintains the current draw size or exceeds it, it can potentially surpass 2017’s record. The Govt. of Canada has a target of 74,900 new admissions for 2018 through the FSWP, FSTC, and the CEC. The target is set at 81,400 for the year 2019.
